Bunmi makes her way over to the sidewalk and gently slumps down next to a street sign. She starts undoing the laces of her sparkly yellow skates and pulls her sneakers out of a tote bag. It’s not that late in the night, but she’s been skating for almost an hour and is done for today.

One thing is for certain: Bunmi is in tune with herself now. She’s decided to let herself be guided by what an ethical—not a religious—Bunmi would do on a case-by-case basis. “I would love to have my spirituality figured out,” she tells me, “but that’s not my condition. I’m just kind of winging it.” She’s tired from the long day at her office job—and from a lot of questioning, thinking, trying, and changing over the past few years. Growing pains.

She appears to be at ease with the fact that she’s still figuring it all out, and grateful for the freedom to discover. Slowly, she’s learning what it feels like to live your own life. Self-determination, she’s realized, is not only invigorating, it’s also her right.
